7th and 8th grade students integrated language arts into visual arts with this poetry project. They used pages from recycled books and created poems out of the words printed on the page. They circled their words to make their poems and made a drawing that related to their poem with black ink.

This was an awesome project in 7th/8th grade art classes! Students explored famous works of art history as well as pop culture. We discussed what is included in the umbrella of pop culture and how that changes over time to reflect current society. Pop culture includes cultural activities, ideas, or products that reflect or target the tastes of the general population of any society. Students then researched major works of art history ranging from Classical Greece to Modern Art. Each student chose an artwork and an element of pop culture to insert. Some awesome examples included cell phones instead of clocks in Dali's The Persistence of Memory, Princess Leia and R2D2 in Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte , and Goku from Dragonball Z in Magritte's Son of Man.
4th Grade art class followed a guided drawing lesson to learn the technique of Zentangle. After they learned the new practice, they created a map and filled the positive space with different Zentangle patterns. In 4th grade, students study cartography and geography and we integrated art into those studies by creating our Zentangle versions. They could choose a state, region, country, or continent for this project with a few students creating their own world to map.
In 1st Grade, we discovered different lines and patterns for our new alphabet artworks. Students drew the first letter of their name and filled the positive space with the different lines and patterns we discussed in class and new patterns and designs they created.
1st Grade Art Classes discovered painted collage through the illustrations of Jon Klassen and Eric Carle. We focused on TEXTURE for this project and students worked to create different textures with their painted papers. They cut their papers to make the layers of the landscape and make a world in a jar.
