Our 1st grade class has been learning all about the warm and cool colors. They made Starry Night inspired cityscape paintings using only cool colors first and then we moved on to the African savanna for warm color sunsets. We discussed the types of animals we would see in the Serengeti and each student chose an animal for their sunset artwork. The sunsets were made using chalk pastels and the foreground was made with black paint. We even learned a new technique for making realistic looking trees with a big rough paintbrush.

In second grade, we learned about the cool colors and a new art medium: chalk pastels! We read Tuesday, by David Wiesner and discussed how he used cool colors in his illustrations. Students imagined different places their frogs could fly and drew their own illustrations. We had frogs flying into movie theaters to watch The Avengers.
We have all new classes for second semester! Our first project in each class was a small self-portrait done in a monochromatic gray-scale. Each table had a value level (a lightness or darkness target for shading) and then they were all put together out in the hall. We use these first self-portraits to see how much we improve in art skills over the semester.
