One of our final projects in 7th and 8th grade art classes was to create a scientific illustration of a North American animal inspired by the work of John James Audubon, who spent many years travelling the US to find, illustrate, and write about the birds and other animals of America.
Scientific illustration is used to visually communicate the structure and specific details of biological subjects of study. Scientific illustrators use scientifically informed observation, combined with technical and aesthetic skills to accurately portray a subject. They can often achieve more than a photograph with layers and putting together pieces of a specimen.

Second quarter 4th graders created their own Willow Pattern artworks. For more info on the project click here: Willow Pattern
1st grade ended the semester with these awesome self-portraits. We read some of the artist stories in Just Like Me and discussed how artists are able to tell a lot about themselves through what they include in their self-portraits. After carefully using mirrors and our portrait drawing techniques to draw themselves, students added details to their clothes and their background to share something about themselves with the viewer.
