4th Grade students have been studying water in science class. We integrated those concepts into art for this project. Each student created their own waterscape after we learned new techniques for depicting water in tempera and watercolor paint.
If we want creative innovators and industry leaders for our future then we must include the arts in education! This is clearly something, as an art educator, I feel very strongly about. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs are excellent, but if we want our kids to be truly successful then STEM should morph into STEAM to include the arts. This way students are exposed to creative problem solving and imaginative thinking while learning valuable interpersonal and social skills. The Washington Post had an article last fall about the shift to STEAM and how it is amazingly beneficial for our students. Click below to check it out!
STEM to STEAM In both 1st grade and 1st-2nd grade art classes we worked collaboratively to create life-size bodies in motion artworks. We discussed movement and form and ways to show both in art. We discussed color and how different colors can express different feelings and incorporated painted collage. This all came together in our Art in Motion project that has been on display across from the office. This week, the artworks will move to permanent display in the small gym at Maple Grove to share art with the larger school community and inspire others with our colorful movement.
Sometimes in art class, we might finish projects a little early. There are many choices for what students can do next and one of those options is a free-choice artwork. Two 8th grade students wanted to experiment with paint and abstract art in a free-choice time and they created something awesome!
Each art class created an art project to go on display for Dr. Seuss night. In 1st grade, we read Seuss' My Many Colored Days and looked at the art of Franz Marc to make colorful horses that express emotion through color and pose. In 1st-2nd grade class, students worked collaboratively to create murals of scenes from Oh, the Places You'll Go! 6th grade learned about texture and form with paper maché balloons from Oh, the Places You'll Go! as well. 4th grade explored tints and shades in monochromatic artworks of Thing 1 and Thing 2 from The Cat in the Hat. 1st grade class also looked at The Cat in the Hat to learn about pattern and repetition as they created new designs for the Cat's hat. Finally, 8th grade finished their abstract form sculptures that are on display in the main case by the office. They turned out amazing!
