7th/8th Grade Art Class used wood, wire, nylon, and paint to create these abstract sculptures. They learned about balance and movement in art, specifically in sculpture, and applied those principles to their own artwork. Students discovered the abstract sculptures of Jean Arp, Henry Moore, and Dale Chihuly. We specifically looked at the different types of glass sculpture Chihuly, a native Washingtonian, has been able to create over his career that are on display all over the world. Younger classes will also be exploring the work of Chihuly so stay tuned!

2nd Grade Art Class discovered the work of Henri Matisse and used his art as inspiration to make cutout collages in his style. Students learned about geometric and organic shapes and then combined both types in their collages using various colored papers. The class read two stories about Matisse. The first focused on his later work, specifically his collages, called Henri's Scissors. We also read the fun story When Pigasso Met Mootisse. In kindergarten, we explored different examples of painted collage in the illustrations of Jon Klassen and Eric Carle. We talked about different textures and how the different bears and other animals looked like they felt. We created different textures like rough and hairy on our painted papers for our own versions of the bear and the rabbit from Klassen's I Want My Hat Back.
1st Grade Art Class explored texture and shape in the illustrations of Maurice Sendak in Where The wild Things Are. Students created their own original Wild Things using watercolor resist to create different implied textures like scales and fur.
Last week we celebrated Dr. Seuss Day and had a fantastic Dr. Seuss Night on Friday after school. Each art class used something from the world of Dr. Seuss as inspiration for an art project. Kindergarten learned about patterns and designed new patterned hats for the Cat in the Hat. 1st graders created Lorax Landscapes with truffula trees, while 2nd grade made their own Loraxes. In 4th grade, we learned about tints and shades and made crazy monochromatic hair styles for Thing 1 and Thing 2. In 6th grade, students worked collaboratively to make large-scale scenes from Oh The Places You'll Go. These were all on display for Dr. Seuss Night at MG!
