4th grade learned about the Willow Pattern and examined it closely and heard a story explaining the pattern and the poem to go with it. Each student picked a piece of the pattern and created their own painting on a plate zoomed in to one detail. They then had to create their own pattern for the border. For this project we learned about monochromatic color schemes and tints and shades as they were only able to use tints and shades of blue for their painting.
'Two birds flying high, A Chinese vessel, sailing by. A bridge with three men, sometimes four, A willow tree, hanging o'er. A Chinese temple, there it stands, Built upon the river sands. An apple tree, with apples on, A crooked fence to end my song.' We have a new class Instagram! The handle is the same as our class Twitter: @mstinsleyart. I will be posting pictures of finished work, works in progress, and art around the region.
Check it out! In 7th and 8th grade, students chose an animal to draw large on their paper and then they filled the positive space with Zentangle designs. Students were really focused on highly detailed designs and patterns and worked to have variation in their design types to create a dynamic composition. Both 1st grade classes learned about warm colors and cool colors this week. They used watercolors to paint a warm color sky and cool color water. They then learned about different types of bridges, like cable, truss, beam, arch, and suspension. They chose a bridge type and designed their own and painted in black on their waterscape.
7th and 8th Grade Art Students focused on color theory for the beginning of the semester. They learned about different color schemes and how they could use color different ways in their artworks. They then chose a color scheme and a tree style (either sharpie details or painted silhouette) and created their own simple landscape.
In addition to our Color Theory Trees, students could choose to make a jellyfish using wax resist with watercolors. They used a warm color scheme for the jellyfish to contrast with the cool color scheme for the water background.
