The final piece of the Music in Art unit was completed by the 6th graders. They learned about abstract art and how many abstract artists were inspired by music like Kandinsky. We listened to electronic music in class and the students made large-scale abstract paintings inspired by the music.

1st grade art classes explored different types of shapes, organic and geometric, and used their new shape knowledge to create larger than life germs. We integrated science concepts and looked at microscopic images and videos of bacteria and other single-celled organisms. Students got to choose if their bacteria was a good bacteria that helped digest food or if it was a bad bacteria that caused disease and reflect that in the face they added to their germ.
The 7th/8th grade classes have been spending many classes and have put a lot of hard work into their paper mache taxidermy. These pieces were in collaboration with the drama department for the set for It's Bigfoot! this year's play. The play takes place inside a mountain lodge and our taxidermy pieces were featured as main set pieces. Students could work individually or in pairs to create their sculptures. They did a scientific sketch first and then created their animal out of paper mache and a cardboard mount. There were two performances, a matinee for grades K-5 at school and an evening performance for students, families, and friends. Both were awesome and the set turned out great!
I am so excited that our 7th and 8th grade classes get to see this exhibit in two weeks! The Portland Art Museum has an amazing exhibition right now with LAIKA studios. There are props and puppets from all four of their stop motion animated movies. There are sets and concept art as well. They have the largest stop motion puppet ever made on display and the smallest, both from Kubo and the Two Strings. I had the opportunity to attend a lecture by one of the LAIKA communication directors at the museum and learned a lot about the whole stop motion process. It is intricate and amazing! Check out the museum, which is up now until May 20th, 2018. 6th grade has been continuing their music integration with classical music this week. They listened to classical composers and created a silhouette with our re-purposed overhead projector/light box. They then filled the silhouette with imagery that was inspired by how the music made them feel or memories/thoughts it brought to mind.
6th grade students are exploring the connections between music and visual arts. This unit has three main projects associated with it beginning with our jazz inspired project with Zentangle designs. Students created shapes that demonstrated movement and rhythm and split it into sections for their designs. They learned about the connections between Zentangle and jazz like call and response, repetition, and improvisation. We listened to jazz music throughout the project and these are their final works.
