Maple Grove students had some awesome pieces in the district art show this year! Many students were award winners in both painting and drawing as well as digital art with our virtual reality projects. Check out some of their work above and look out for ribbons!

In second grade, we explored the Great Barrier Reef and discovered all the different types of life housed there. We traveled to the bottom of the ocean using Google Cardboard and 360 videos of scuba diving through National Geographic to go swimming with sharks and other coral reef wildlife. Students focused on texture and color and creating realistic underwater plants and animals for this project.
Kindergarten experimented with different shapes and the primary colors to create these paper collages inspired by the work of Piet Mondrian.
Kindergarten art class looked at the work of Claude Monet last week. We talked about what it would be like to paint outside at different times of day and how the light would change and the colors you would see would change. We then used his paintings of waterlilies as inspiration to create our own impressionistic interpretations.
7th and 8th grade art students learned about the awesome work of contemporary artist Amy Genser. They then created an artwork inspired by nature that demonstrated movement or flow. This project took a lot of work and prep with paper rolling. Students then attached their paper rolls to a painted background to create a mixed media artwork. 4th grade's final project before the switch at the quarter was an exploration of movement and line. They created silhouettes of something that could fly, either naturally or man-made. They used different types of lines to create movement in their artwork. Movement in art is how the eye moves about an artwork, but movement can also be demonstrated in the classical sense of something moving across the paper. They tried to show both types with something flying across their paper that draws the eye of the viewer.
Both 2nd grade art classes have been having fun with music and abstract art. We read The Noisy Paintbox and learned about the art of Wassily Kandinsky. Students explored different types of lines and using jazz music as inspiration they "danced" their lines on their papers with black paint. They then filled in their space with many different colors.
In 4th grade we have been integrating a lot of science with our camouflage project! Students discussed animal adaptations, specifically highlighting different types of camouflage. We talked about how both predator and prey use camouflage for opposite reasons. Students then chose an animal that demonstrates camouflage in some way and painted a zoomed-in painting of that animal. The final step was to camouflage their own hand into their work and take a picture. In 4th grade we revisited an annual favorite with the monochromatic designs of the Willow Pattern. Students integrated some social studies and learn about trade in the 18th century between Europe and Asia. We talked about the Willow Pattern poem that explains the elements found in the pattern. Students then chose one or more elements of the pattern to create on their own plates using tints and shades of blue and adding a patterned border of their design.
Kindergarten art class discovered the work of Hundertwasser this past week. They learned that he liked layers and spirals in his explorations of nature. Students created these mixed media projects with a liquid watercolor background and construction paper layered trees.
