The elements of art are the building blocks of visual arts and we typically focus on a few for each project in class. For this project we focused on TEXTURE and SPACE. Students used magazines to create detailed landscape collages. They needed to have a foreground, middle ground, and background to show depth in space. They also needed to show different types of texture by either making smooth cuts to the edges of their magazine pieces or by roughly ripping the pieces.
Both First Grade Art Classes visited the Northern Lights in class using Google Cardboard. We learned about the science behind the Aurora Borealis and how the different colors are created. Students then made a painted collage landscape using salted watercolor technique. After they had at least 3 layers of mountains to show depth, they used chalk pastels and blending to create their own Northern Lights.
