In 7th/8th Grade Art Class we looked at adding texture to our paintings with rolled paper. We studied Amy Genser's art for inspiration. Check out her website here! She uses paper as pigment and constructs pieces by layering, cutting, rolling, and combining paper. She is fascinated by the flow of water, the shape of beehives, and the organic irregularity of plants, flowers, rock formations, barnacles, moss, and seaweed. For this project, students chose an aspect of nature as their inspiration and made an abstract painting background before adding rolled paper to turn their painting into a relief sculpture.

7th and 8th Graders integrated math concepts into art class and learned about optical art. We talked about different illusions that can be created in art that can give the viewer the impression of movement, hidden images, flashing and vibrating patterns, or of swelling or warping.
1st Grade learned about using value to create the illusion of form. We studied different still-life drawings and discussed how the artists used light and dark shades to make their work seem 3D. Students used these techniques to create a still-life drawing of fruit with a clear light source creating shadows.
6th Grade students created free-form Zentangle designs inspired by jazz music. We discussed the similarities between the music style and the art practice, like repetition, rhythm, and call-response. Students were encouraged to incorporate designs we had learned in class as well as their own original designs.
In Kindergarten Art Class we discovered the abstraction of Joan Miró. Students learned how Miró sometimes struggled with his drawings and his teacher would have him touch what he wanted to draw without looking at it to get the shape right. We did our own version of "touch drawing" in class. I put various items in a big bag and students took turns feeling the objects without looking in the bag and then they drew what the felt on their papers.
We also discussed how Miró was interested in painting what he saw in his imagination. He wanted to depict the images he saw in his mind as well as those he saw with his eyes. This way, he could demonstrate the power of imagination to transform reality. In class we added imaginations shapes and lines to create our own abstract paintings inspired by Miró.
