In Kindergarten, we read the book Snowballs, by Lois Ehlert. We discussed different types of texture and how we can achieve different those different textures with painting techniques. For this project we scraped paint with dry and brittle brushes to create bark texture, we used salted watercolor to create a feathery texture, and we splatter painted for our snow texture. We also used watercolor wax resist with crayons so give our birds some interesting feather patterns. Students then cut out their shapes and assembled their mixed media collage artworks with snow as the finishing touch.
