This was an awesome project in 7th/8th grade art classes! Students explored famous works of art history as well as pop culture. We discussed what is included in the umbrella of pop culture and how that changes over time to reflect current society. Pop culture includes cultural activities, ideas, or products that reflect or target the tastes of the general population of any society. Students then researched major works of art history ranging from Classical Greece to Modern Art. Each student chose an artwork and an element of pop culture to insert. Some awesome examples included cell phones instead of clocks in Dali's The Persistence of Memory, Princess Leia and R2D2 in Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte , and Goku from Dragonball Z in Magritte's Son of Man.
