In Kindergarten Art Class we discovered the abstraction of Joan Miró. Students learned how Miró sometimes struggled with his drawings and his teacher would have him touch what he wanted to draw without looking at it to get the shape right. We did our own version of "touch drawing" in class. I put various items in a big bag and students took turns feeling the objects without looking in the bag and then they drew what the felt on their papers.
We also discussed how Miró was interested in painting what he saw in his imagination. He wanted to depict the images he saw in his mind as well as those he saw with his eyes. This way, he could demonstrate the power of imagination to transform reality. In class we added imaginations shapes and lines to create our own abstract paintings inspired by Miró.
